Minato Mirai, Yokohama
The harbourside promenade, Red Brick Warehouse and Chinatown can be combined flexibly around meal times and how long you want to stay.

In and out of Tokyo, linking Yokohama's harbourfront, the old capital of Kamakura, the hot springs of Hakone, Lake Yamanaka, Oshino Hakkai and Lake Kawaguchi; 4 nights split between Tokyo, Hakone and Lake Kawaguchi to cut daily backtracking and luggage shuffling.
Overview
This 5-day route suits first-time visitors to the Kanto region who want city, old capital, hot springs and Mt. Fuji in one trip. The first two days run from Tokyo through Yokohama and Kamakura on to Hakone, so there is no doubling back the same day; the fourth night moves to Lake Kawaguchi, putting you in place for Mt. Fuji at dawn and an easier run to Gotemba on Day 5.

Highlights

Itinerary
Your driver meets you at Haneda or Narita Airport according to your flight. With an early arrival there is time for Tokyo Tower, then a stroll and dinner in either Shibuya or Shinjuku; on a late flight the day is simply pickup, check-in and rest, with no city sights squeezed in.
Spend the morning at Minato Mirai and the Red Brick Warehouse in Yokohama, with lunch in Yokohama Chinatown. In the afternoon continue to Kamakura and pick your priorities from the Great Buddha of Kamakura, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Komachi-dori Street and the Kamakurakokomae railway crossing, before driving on to Hakone for the night. This is a long day on the road, so we do not recommend trying to fit in all four Kamakura stops.
Board the Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise for the lakeshore and the Hakone mountains, then pay a visit to Hakone Shrine. In the afternoon, subject to volcanic gas, strong wind and ropeway operations, head up to Owakudani; on a clear day there is a chance of seeing Mt. Fuji. Afterwards return to the ryokan for a soak, with plenty of rest time kept in reserve.
Leave Hakone for the Fuji Five Lakes, starting with Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai. If the Fuji Subaru Line is open and vehicles are allowed through, Mt. Fuji 5th Station follows; if snow, strong wind, road closures or seasonal restrictions rule out the drive up, the day switches to Lake Kawaguchi, Oishi Park or Fujiyoshida instead. Check in at Lake Kawaguchi in the early evening to avoid backtracking the next day.
If the morning weather is kind, start with Mt. Fuji from the lakeshore, then drive to Gotemba Premium Outlets for shopping. The rest depends on your flight: with a late departure and clear roads, a short stop at either Asakusa or the Imperial Palace Outer Garden is possible; with an earlier flight you go straight to Haneda or Narita Airport. Buffer time for international check-in and traffic comes first, so shopping, several Tokyo sights and the airport drop-off are not all guaranteed in a single day.

Stops

The harbourside promenade, Red Brick Warehouse and Chinatown can be combined flexibly around meal times and how long you want to stay.

Choose the stops that suit you best from the Great Buddha, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Komachi-dori Street and the railway crossing made famous by anime.

The cruise links lake scenery with Hakone Shrine, and in fine weather there is a chance of seeing Mt. Fuji in the distance.

The spring-fed village, Lake Yamanaka and Lake Kawaguchi are all on the route, multiplying your chances of seeing Mt. Fuji from different angles.

The range of brands and the site itself are large, so make a shopping list in advance and allow time to regroup, load the car and get to the airport.

On arrival and departure days, stops are chosen to suit your flights from Tokyo Tower, Shibuya, Shinjuku or Asakusa.
