Overview

Tour Overview

This route skips the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the north of the main island and gives that time to the central west coast and the south instead. On day one you drive straight from the airport up to Yomitan to see the cliffs and lighthouse at Cape Zanpa and rest by the sea at BANTA CAFE. Day two starts with snorkelling at the Blue Cave, followed by Ryukyu Mura and a limestone cave in the afternoon, with the night spent at American Village in Chatan.

Day three returns to the Naha area: Naminoue Shrine, Itoman Fish Market, DMM Kariyushi Aquarium and Senagajima Island all sit close to the airport, and the evening is free on Kokusai Street. On the final day you visit Ou Island and the Ryukyu Glass Village before your airport drop-off. You sleep in a different area each night and your luggage travels with the car, so there is no trailing back to the same hotel every evening.

Itinerary

Day by Day

DAY1

Naha Airport → Cape Zanpa Lighthouse → Zanpa Beach → Hoshino Resorts BANTA CAFE → Hotel

Your driver meets you on arrival at Naha Airport and, rather than heading into the city, follows the west coast north to Yomitan. First stop is Cape Zanpa, where coral-limestone cliffs run all the way down to the sea and a white lighthouse stands at the tip of the headland; on a clear day, if you have the energy, you can climb the tower for the view. Next you paddle at the neighbouring Zanpa Beach before moving on to Hoshino Resorts BANTA CAFE, where you can settle onto a seafront terrace with a drink. Yomitan lies on the island's western side, so the sun often sets straight into the sea at dusk. Your first night is at a resort hotel beside Cape Zanpa, with no need to rush anywhere.

DAY2

Hotel → Blue Cave snorkelling → Ryukyu Mura → CAVE OKINAWA limestone cave → American Village → Hotel

Today is about the sea and island culture. The morning begins with snorkelling at the Blue Cave at Cape Maeda in Onna, entering the water with an instructor from a local operator as sunlight refracts through the cave mouth and floods the water below with blue; sea conditions are usually calmer in the morning, which is why it comes first. Once you are dried off and changed, you continue to Ryukyu Mura to see preserved traditional houses, folk performances and hands-on craft experiences. In the afternoon you step into the CAVE OKINAWA limestone cave, atmospherically lit inside and a welcome refuge whether the day is hot or wet. At dusk you reach American Village in Chatan for shopping, dinner and the sunset over the beach, with the night spent nearby.

Meals Breakfast: at the hotel | Lunch: at your own expense | Dinner: at your own expense in American Village Stay DoubleTree by Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort (or similar)
DAY3

Hotel → Naminoue Shrine → Itoman Fish Market → DMM Kariyushi Aquarium → Senagajima Island → Kokusai Street → Hotel

The day opens with a visit to Naminoue Shrine in Naha, its vermilion hall built on a seaside cliff with Naminoue Beach right alongside. You then head south to Itoman Fish Market to pick out sashimi, a seafood rice bowl or something freshly fried for lunch. In the afternoon you visit DMM Kariyushi Aquarium inside iias Okinawa Toyosaki in Tomigusuku, where projections and lighting are woven into the displays and sloths, penguins and other animals can be watched up close; it is entirely indoors, so rain makes no difference. Towards evening you stop at Umikaji Terrace on Senagajima Island, a hillside of whitewashed shops with a little-Greece feel right beside the airport, where you can watch planes take off and land over the sea. Finally it is back into central Naha for free time on Kokusai Street to browse and shop for souvenirs.

Meals Breakfast: at the hotel | Lunch: at your own expense at Itoman Fish Market | Dinner: at your own expense on Kokusai Street Stay OMO5 Okinawa Naha by Hoshino Resorts (or similar)
DAY4

Hotel → Ou Island → Ryukyu Glass Village → Naha Airport

The last day heads for the south of the main island. First comes Ou Island in Nanjo City, linked to the mainland by a short bridge: a quiet little fishing village where cats doze in the sun along the harbour and you can buy freshly fried tempura to eat as you stroll. Next is the Ryukyu Glass Village in Itoman, where you can watch artisans blowing glass and, time permitting, join a workshop to make a glass of your own. The tour then ends at Naha Airport; both stops lie south of the airport, and your driver adjusts how long you linger to suit your departure time.
